THE NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED ARBITRATORS COLLABORATION WITH THE ROTARY CLUB OF MARYLAND IKEJA, DISTRICT 9110.

The Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NICArb), in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Maryland, marked the Rotary Club’s Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution month. In marking the theme of the month February 2022, several activities were carried out, of which included a school seminar held at the Wasimi Community High School, Onigbongbo, Maryland on the 15th of February, 2022 and a guest lecture held on the 22nd of February, 2022 with the purpose of bridging the knowledge gap in the areas of conflict prevention and resolution.

The school seminar, which focused on Conflicts among Teenagers, aimed at discussing negative behaviors and practices. It was facilitated by the Registrar/CEO of NICArb, Mrs. Shola Oshodi John, FCArb as she spurred the minds of the students to becoming positive agents of change.

Highlights from the seminar were lectures sensitizing the students on key factors that cause conflicts, the impact of negative behaviors on their future and the steps to take in curbing negative behaviors.The highly engaging presentation opened the floor for questions as most students took the opportunity to ask questions about peer pressure, the willingness to report abuse and the steps to becoming better students and leaders of tomorrow. In attendance was Mrs. Oreoluwa Soetan the Principal of Wasimi Community High School, Mr. Bamidele Onoja the President of the Rotary Club of Maryland and other members of the Rotary Club of Maryland.

Following the school seminar, a lecture was held on the 22nd of February, 2022, which was to broaden the knowledge of members and further create awareness on key strategies in resolving conflicts and the promotion of peace among members and families.

The event which drew members from all works of life, with key members of the Club present, which were Mr. Bamidele Onoja (President, Rotary Club of Maryland), Mr. Mauruf Bello (Vice President, Rotary Club of Maryland), Mr. Seye Arowolo (Secretary, Rotary Club of Maryland), Mr.Bola Oyebade (Immediate Past District Governor) and the Guest Lecturer Mrs. Shola Oshodi John FCArb, Registrar/CEO of NICArb, who was duly represented by Mr. Edward Ejemeh a Fellow of NICArb.

The lecture began with an introduction to conflicts as it relates to the family, its causes and effects, and the impact of conflicts on family relationships and marriages. The very engaging session led to an open discussion as several members of the Rotary Club of Maryland lent their voices to the topic. Many suggested that some factors that could lead to conflict involved the conflict of interest as it bothers around the roles and responsibilities of members of the family while others agreed that the lack of trust in marriage is a major factor that led to conflict.

Mr. Ejemeh FCArb, representing Mrs. Shola Oshodi John, the Registrar/CEO of NICArb also shared experiences as an experienced professional as he proffered and made recommendations to key challenges shared by members of the Club.

In rounding up the event, the members expressed their gratitude to the Guest Lecturer for the delivery of the lecture and an award of appreciation was presented to the Guest Lecturer, Mrs Shola Oshodi-John FCArb, and Mr. Ejemeh FCArb on the successful delivery of the lecture.
