Practical understanding of Arbitration in Dispute Settlement

The Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators’ (NICArb) just concluded her much anticipated webinar on “Practical Understanding of Arbitration in Dispute Settlement” which held today the 15th of September, 2021.

The insightful programme which commenced at 11am was opened by the Deputy Registrar of NICArb Mrs. Chinyere Onuorah, MCArb who gave an opening address and handed over to the moderator, Mrs. Olamide E. Adeleye MCArb who further welcomed all participants and speakers and also recognized the presence of the Registrar/CEO Mrs. Shola Oshodi-John FCArb.

The webinar aimed to demystify the concept of arbitration and dwelt on the fact that arbitration is not meant for lawyers or professionals alone in the legal field but for everyone from all backgrounds irrespective of your field of specialization. This session was brilliantly captured by Mrs. Aanuoluwapo Omoloju MCArb. She gave a full description and expository analysis of the meaning and scope of arbitration, arbitration clause, a contract and an arbitration agreement.

The next session was chaired by Professor Joseph Igwe FCArb, who spoke from his personal experience as a non-legal practitioner (as an architect) who is also an arbitrator. He highlighted some of his experiences in the field of construction and building, quantity surveying amongst others. He also debunked the myth that arbitration is looked upon as a lawyer’s business or specifically for those in the legal field. In the light of this he disagreed saying that he was first introduced and taught about arbitration by his lecturer who was also an architect.

The Registrar during her closing remark said that lawyers and those from other professional backgrounds should not shy away from Arbitration because it is the best mechanism for dispute settlement. She also added that “Arbitration is not just about laws but also about interest”. She further added that the institute (NICArb) is open to train everyone interested in Arbitration & ADR and settling of disputes.

The webinar ended at 1pm with the moderator thanking everyone for their kind participation.
