Noel Whelan has admitted he is “hopeful” Newcastle United will be taken over after an update on the arbitration process.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker insisted the Magpies “deserve” a new owner after Mike Ashley’s lack of ambition.
Speaking at a Competition Appeal Tribunal hearing between the Premier League and St James Holdings, the Premier League’s representative Adam Lewis QC confirmed the arbitration process would commence on January 3rd.
The case, which is set to deal with directorship issues from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund’s involvement, is expected to run for around a week.
Newcastle confirmed in July the main hearing had been delayed due to issues with the disclosure of evidence. As such, the Magpies now have three months to wait until a decision could be made.
Whelan admitted Newcastle had been hamstrung by a lack of financial backing from current owner Ashley. He revealed he is among those hoping for a positive resolution in the arbitration process.
