The Nigerian Army has said cases of human rights violation against its personnel are civil in nature and often end in compensation or settlement. It had in 2016 set up a human rights desk to address complaints of rights violation against its personnel.
Despite many allegations against the Army, there has been no report from the desk on the number of personnel it had prosecuted for human rights violations. The Army spokesman, Brig Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, in an interview on Tuesday, said the service was using the alternative dispute resolution method for cases against its personnel.
“However, most cases are purely civil in nature and often attract compensation or settlement. The human rights desk usually invites the parties for hearing and confirmation of the allegations. The alternative dispute resolution method is employed in handling most ofthe cases”, he said.
